There is a legend of
Stanislaw Warszycki connected with the castle. He was the castellan
who was famous for cruelty and huge wealth hidden in Ogrodzieniec and
Danków. Because of this reason, he was also suspected of being
in cahoots with the Devil. In a moonlit
night he appears in the form of a Black dog who is pulling three
meters long chain and it is said that the dog guards the treasure
which is hidden in the cellar. It is said that there is his
daughter’s Barbara statue, but she did not receive from him even a
single thaler. Lots of people tried to find the treasure but without
success.
Probably, Warszycki
was very cruel to his wives and lieges. One of his wives was always
flogging in the courtyard and the second one 40 years younger for
infidelity was walled up alive, and then he blew up that part of
castle. It is rather more improbable, however, cave called Warszycki
ordeal survived to the present day. It is a place where the castellan
harassed his victims.
Even if he was very
cruel he is remembered in Polish history as a positive figure because
he played very important role in defending Częstochowa against
Swedish, and he also delivered 12 cannons and a herd of cattle to
Jasna Góra.
In that archive,
we can find extensive correspondence with the prior of monastery
Augustyn Kordecki. After cleansing the surroundings from Swedish
people, Warszycki invited King Jan Kazimierz with his wife, Queen
Maria Ludwika and he also invited Stefan Czarniecki and other
senators to his castle.
It is claimed that the
castellan was the model of the main character that was Kmicic in
Sienkiewicz novel, because as the Kmicic, Warszycki was patriot and
was very cruel man.
Kmicic ended as a
henpecked husband surrounded with love, peace and prosperity.
Similarly, Warszycki calmed down and led very peaceful life with
Helena, princess in Wiśnicze and Zbaraże. Warszycki had a son who
was called Jan Kazimierz in honour of King Jan Kazimierz and he also
had two daughters.
